Eva Jarawan

Dr. Jarawan is a public health specialist and operations manager with over 30 years of experience in international development, including 24 years at the World Bank. She directed global projects for improving the lives of under-served populations in the Middle East and North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa, and East Asia and Pacific. She held several leadership positions at the World Bank, including: Sector Manager for the health program in sub-Saharan Africa, Human Development Manager for health, education and social protection for West Africa; and Lead Health Specialist and Operations Advisor for East Asia and the Pacific region.

Dr. Jarawan has more than 10 years of experience in the academic field teaching graduate and undergraduate public health students and conducting health research. Since retiring from the World Bank end of 2014, she was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Health at Georgetown University where she teaches comparative health systems, health policy, control of non-communicable diseases in developing countries, project management, and advises students on careers in global health.

Prior to the World Bank, Dr. Jarawan held academic positions in the department of Health Services Administration at the American University of Beirut, the department of Health Services Management and Policy at the University of Michigan’s (UM) School of Public Health in Ann Arbor, and the department of Health Care at UM’s School of Health Sciences in Flint. She developed and conducted graduate courses in health planning and regulatory processes, health economics, evaluation of health programs, and health management.

She has been recognized for her technical skills in health policy, health system strengthening, human resources for health, and public health, and her leadership skills in strategic thinking and innovation. Dr. Jarawan is also a dedicated mentor and has championed cross-cultural communication and building multi-sectoral partnerships. She is particularly interested in the multi-sectoral dimensions of health and in applying innovative methods to improve health outcomes.

Dr. Jarawan holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration with a major in Health Administration and an M.B.A. from Georgia State University, and a Master of Public Health and a BS in Environmental Health from the American University of Beirut.
