Embracing Discomfort
During our class conversation with Francis Collins, Ph.D., M.D., I was impressed not just by the breadth of his accomplishments but by the humility and the honesty with which he spoke about them. Hearing how Dr. Collins went from growing up on a farm in Virginia, homeschooled by his mother until the sixth grade, to eventually leading the Human Genome Project felt like a story about curiosity, risk-taking, and self-discovery more than anything else.
Dr. Collins reflected on his own uncertainty and willingness to pivot. In graduate school at Yale University, he realized his research lacked a human connection. Instead of ignoring that feeling, he followed it. He switched paths, applied to medical school, and later found his passion in genetics.
When he was asked to lead the Human Genome Project, he initially doubted his ability to do it, but accepted the challenge anyway. I found that moment especially relatable. As an undergraduate who is trying to find my own footing, I have faced many moments of uncertainty and understand how hard it is to enter the unknown. His story reminded me not to underestimate myself or assume that opportunities are meant for someone more qualified. Growth, as he showed, happens when we step into discomfort and trust our capacity to learn.
During our discussion, I asked Dr. Collins about the mistakes the scientific community has made in communicating breakthroughs, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how trust might be rebuilt. His answer was refreshingly candid. He said the scientific community “messed up” by projecting certainty at a time when the virus was still being studied. Rather than being transparent about the uncertainty and ongoing learning process, scientists and institutions often presented information as final, which later created confusion and distrust when guidance changed. He emphasized that honesty about uncertainty is essential in maintaining public trust. That point resonated with me deeply because it reframed how I think about leadership and communication. Even in research or community work, admitting what we do not yet know can be just as important as sharing what we do.
Dr. Collins’s story encourages me to boldly follow what excites me, embrace change, and believe in my own abilities.
