Thomas Sherman

A 1977 graduate of Michigan State University with a B.S. degree in Biochemistry. He earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1983 from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, conducting the final three years of PhD research at Columbia University Medical Center. His post-doctoral research in molecular neuroendocrinology was conducted at the University of Michigan in the Mental Health Research Institute from 1983 to 1989. He joined the faculty in the Department of Neuroscience & Behavior at the University of Pittsburgh in 1989, and moved to the Department of Physiology & Biophysics and the Division of Endocrinology & Metabolism at Georgetown University Medical Center in 1996. He is now a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology & Physiology. His research focused on neuropeptide gene expression in the CNS. More recently, his interests, writings, and teaching have focused on the endocrinology and biochemistry of metabolism, medical nutrition, and the relationships between nutrition, chronic disease, exercise, sleep, and body weight control. He directs the medical school course: Intersession 4 – Nutrition & Patient Health and teaches an additional eight medical and graduate courses in nutrition, biochemistry, endocrinology, and neuroscience. Dr. Sherman is a member of the Joint Committee on Graduate Studies (formally the Graduate Executive Committee), a Team Leader in the Special Master’s Program, and student advisor for the departmental PhD program. Dr. Sherman is an outspoken advocate for increased medical nutrition education with the aim of creating a generation of physicians who can serve as role models to their patients regarding nutrition, cooking, and exercise.
