Edward B. Healton, MD, MPH, has been a trusted and highly regarded member of the Georgetown University community for nearly 25 years. Previously professor and chair of Georgetown’s Department of Neurology, he has led Georgetown University Medical Center since 2015 with a steady hand as executive vice president for health sciences and executive dean of the School of Medicine. Dr. Healton shared reflections from his decades-long career in medicine as a clinician and leader guided by his dedication to Jesuit values, especially social justice.

This event was hosted through Georgetown University’s Conversations in Health: Global to Local class, which invites global health professionals to Georgetown’s campus to engage in discussions regarding their career paths and expertise.

Edward B. Healton, M.D., MPH, executive vice president for health sciences and executive dean of the Georgetown University School of Medicine, is responsible for advancing the educational and research missions of Georgetown University Medical Center and advancing the academic health system partnership with MedStar Health. Healton began his term on July 1, 2015. Notably, during his tenure, he co-led the university-wide Global Health Initiative established in 2017 that led to the establishment of the Global Health Institute in 2022. Prior to leading the Medical Center, he served as chair of neurology at Georgetown from 2007 to 2015. Healton received his M.D. from Creighton University School of Medicine and his MPH from Columbia University. He completed his residency in neurology at Columbia. Healton has published extensively in clinical neuroscience, especially in cerebrovascular disease and the neurological complications of systemic diseases, as well as community-based health services research.

John T. Monahan is a professor in the Department of Medicine, a senior advisor for global health to Georgetown University’s President John J. DeGioia, a senior fellow at the McCourt School of Public Policy, and a senior scholar at the O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown Law.
