A Conversation with John Nkengasong

John Nkengasong is a globally recognized virologist whose leadership has shaped major international responses to infectious disease threats. In this conversation, Nkengasong will reflect on his efforts to combat HIV/AIDS through the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS and strengthen global health diplomacy through cross-continental collaboration.

John Nkengasong, Ph.D., is a distinguished virologist and global health leader. As former U.S. ambassador at large, U.S. Global AIDS coordinator, and U.S. Department of State senior bureau official for global health security and diplomacy, he led the largest international effort against the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Previously, as the founding director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Nkengasong orchestrated Africa’s COVID-19 response, securing over 400 million vaccine doses during a critical global shortage. His exceptional contributions have earned him numerous honors, including the 2022 Virchow Prize for Global Health, the 2020 Global Goalkeeper Award, and election to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine. In 2021, he was named among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People and was awarded knighthoods from multiple African governments. In 2023, he was named African of the Year by CNBC Africa and Forbes Africa.

John T. Monahan, J.D., is a senior advisor to the Georgetown University Global Health Institute, a professor in the Department of Medicine, a senior fellow at the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University, and a senior scholar at the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown Law.
