Global Health Diplomacy and Security: Intersections Between the Global Health Security Agenda and National Public Health Institutes

Event Series: Global Public Health Seminars

Global Health Diplomacy and Security: Intersections Between the Global Health Security Agenda and National Public Health Institutes

Public health activities can be fragmented with responsibility spread across multiple entities, either within the Ministry of Health (MOH) or across multiple entities outside of the MOH. Disjointed systems can lead to inefficiency, a lack of leadership and accountability, and, ultimately, a reduced impact of programs. In our first Global Health Security Seminar of 2019, Jim Banaski and Shelly Bratton will discuss how CDC’s National Public Health Institute (NPHI) Program is working to build strong, functional National Public Health Institutes (NPHIs) that can serve as the home for health security activities; provide the capacity to plan, coordinate, and implement; and help to link systems that promote sustainable health security investments.

Mr. Jim Banaski  is currently on detail as the senior public health emergency management advisor for the National Public Health Institute Program in the Division of Global Health Protection at CDC. Prior to joining  CDC, Mr. Banaski worked with the US Army North and is an 11-year veteran of the US Army Chemical Corp.

Ms. Shelly Bratton is the associate director for program development for the National Public Health Institute Program in the Division of Global Health Protection at CDC.

This event is part of the Global Health Security Seminar Series, co-sponsored by Georgetown’s Center for Global Health Science and Security and the Global Health Initiative. Over the course of the 2018-2019 academic year, speakers in the series will address critical issues in global health in an effort to promote greater dialogue regarding pandemic preparedness across the university and the wider Washington D.C. community.
