Global Health Diplomacy and Security: One Health in the Twenty-First Century

Event Series: Global Public Health Seminars

The recognition that human, animal, and ecological health are inextricably linked has led to important developments in global health education, research, and practice. A One Health approach that embodies this reality–with a focus on preventive and collaborative interventions–holds the potential to reap rapid benefits for public health. However, many barriers exist to achieving a comprehensive approach. Dr. William Karesh, who coined the term One Health, discussed the benefits, ornery barriers, and future prospects for One Health in the twenty-first century.

This event was part of the Global Health Security Seminar Series, co-sponsored by Georgetown’s Center for Global Health Science and Security and the Global Health Initiative. Now in its second year, series speakers will address critical issues in global health in an effort to promote greater dialogue regarding pandemic preparedness across the university and the wider Washington, D.C., community.

William (Billy) Karesh, DVM, is the executive vice president for health and policy for EcoHealth Alliance. He serves as the inter-project liaison for the USAID Emerging Pandemic Threats PREDICT-2 program, is a member of World Health Organization’s IHR Roster of Experts, and also serves as the president of the World Organization for Animal Health Working Group on Wildlife.
