For sixty years, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the Department of Defense has held to a singular and enduring mission: to make pivotal investments in breakthrough technologies for national security. Central to that mission is ensuring health security for citizens of the United States and protecting the armed forces from biological threats. In the final Global Health Security Seminar of 2018, Col. Matthew Hepburn discussed and demonstrated several novel technologies for responding to pandemics.

This event was part of the Global Health Security Seminar Series, co-sponsored by Georgetown’s Center for Global Health Science and Security and the Global Health Initiative. Over the course of the 2018-2019 academic year, speakers in the series addressed critical issues in global health in an effort to promote greater dialogue regarding pandemic preparedness across the university and the wider Washington D.C. community.

Col. Matthew Hepburn has been assigned to DARPA as a program manager since 2013. Prior to joining DARPA, Col. Hepburn served as the director of medical preparedness on the White House National Security Staff. Additional previous assignments include: chief medical officer at a Level II medical facility in Iraq, clinical research director at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases, exchange officer to the United Kingdom, and internal medicine chief of residents at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
