A major outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza has decimated wild birds globally and is spreading in North American poultry and cattle. The current outbreak is unprecedented in both its scope and, particularly, the sustained mammalian transmission seen among marine mammals, European fur farms and cattle. Although human cases have appeared mild and human to human transmission has not yet been proven, surveillance is limited and at least one human case has occurred absent known exposure to infected animals. Taken together, there is significant concern that the current global panzootic could, given close ongoing human-animal contact and potential viral evolution, risk triggering a global pandemic.
