Dr. Barbosa will share his vision for advancing health equity and innovation across the Americas, drawing on his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and decades of public health experience.

Jarbas Barbosa, M.D., Ph.D., is the director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Previously, he served as PAHO’s assistant director, leading efforts to support member states in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic and mitigating its impact on priority health programs. Before joining PAHO, Dr. Barbosa held several positions within the Brazilian National Health System, including vice minister for health surveillance, vice minister for science and technology, deputy minister, and president of Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária, Brazil’s national health regulatory authority.Dr. Barbosa has received numerous awards and recognitions and is an honorary member of the Brazilian National Academy of Medicine as well as an international member of the American National Academy of Medicine. He has published extensively on global health, health systems management, disease surveillance, and digital transformation.
