A Message on Supporting the Georgetown Community During a Shifting U.S. Global Health Landscape

Over the last two weeks, we have experienced sudden and significant shifts in the U.S. global health landscape that have been unsettling for many of us. Interim President Robert Groves recently shared important updates regarding federal government activity in his message to the university community, in which he reaffirmed Georgetown University’s institutional values grounded in the 500-year Jesuit educational education.
Our team at the Georgetown University Global Health Institute has been working alongside university leadership to closely monitor the situation and to carefully analyze the many orders and assess their potential implications across our global health work. We recognize these recent developments have created uncertainty for many of us and we will be working to share information and provide support wherever we can.
Global health has been particularly affected by the recent changes, with some programs being directly impacted by instructions to pause federally funded foreign assistance programs. We encourage those impacted to reach out to the team at Georgetown’s Joint Office of Research Administration (JORA), which has provided guidance for communicating with agencies around stop work orders. Jennifer Hayes-Klosteridis, Ph.D., assistant vice president for Global Health Operations at the Georgetown University Medical Center, is also working closely with colleagues to explore options for how to manage these disruptions and mitigate their impacts.
The work we all do in global health has never been more important. At the Georgetown University Global Health Institute, we are committed to supporting faculty, staff, and students navigate these changing times. As we continue to grow our impact, we are guided by our core values of cura personalis (care of the person), pursuit of the greater good, and being people for others.
