Dr. Deus Bazira, Ph.D., MPH, MBA, is the inaugural director of the Georgetown University Global Health Institute. A member of the Georgetown community since 2019, he is also an associate professor of medicine at Georgetown’s School of Medicine and serves as director of Georgetown’s Center for Global Health Practice and Impact (CGHPI). At CGHPI, he leads a multidisciplinary team working to strengthen health systems and solve intractable public health challenges through implementation and improvement science, data science, and health technology solutions in several countries. Bazira has undertaken research in public-private partnership in health, diffusion of health innovations, innovative health financing under decentralized systems, pharmaceutical regulation, hospital governance, and efficiency. His current research focus includes: modeling care delivery to optimize health services and population health outcomes; novel approaches to improve country capacity and preparedness to detect, prevent, and respond to major health security threats; and translating evidence from research and program interventions to improve public health policy and practice and enhance sustainability.

Career Highlights:

  • Worked at the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he was the founding director of the Center for International Health, Education, and Biosecurity.​
  • Served as program director for Oliver Tambo Health Leadership Fellowship Program and senior lecturer in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
  • Has been and continues to serve as principal investigator on several implementation and improvement science programs covering broad public health diseases including HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, plus health workforce development, health systems, health protection, and epidemiological surveillance in Haiti, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Botswana, Nigeria, Tanzania, Marshall Islands, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Tanzania, South Africa, and the United States.
  • Led several education, research, and institutional strengthening programs, as well as implementation of point-of-care technologies and strategic planning for ministries of health, pharmaceutical sector regulation, and innovative health care financing.
  • Consulted widely for governments and industry in several African countries, the Caribbean, India, and China.
  • Was a recipient with distinction of the Arthur B. Holzworth Endowed Scholarship in Health Leadership in 2013 at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
